2014 recap.

It's december already. *sigh*
But it's been an interesting year for me so far.

- After 2 and a half years of work, i quit my position as head of documentation at JKT48 Project in January.

- Before i left, the group titled a song after my name haha that was fucking hilarious.

- Made a concert film "Lemuria live at Rossi Musik Fatmawati", which i can say is the best concert ever that i attended in 2014!

- Since i have lots of free time after the JKT48 project, i finally got a chance to finish my own documentary movie that i've been doing since 2010,  "BISING". A big thank you to lots of friends who helped me finish this movie!

- Going solo vacation to Macau and Hong Kong and screened "BISING" for the first time (world premiere!) at Re-Records event: Subliminal Lounge #1. Thanks to Dennis Wong for making this happen. Few people came, i think it was around 20 people, it's not a big number but i get a chance to meet new people, that's the only thing that matters.

- Made an experimental documentary about my trip to Hong Kong "孤独 (Gūdú / Solitary)".

- Eurotrip to Neatherlands, Switerland, and Germany.

- "BISING" got an official selection at LUFF 2014 (Lausanne Underground Film and Music Festival) alongside "A l’Est de l’enfer", for the Extreme Indonesia programme.

- And also screened a week before at Cinema Spoutnik in Geneva for GLUFF 2014 (one of the pre-events of LUFF).

- Got a chance to see Antemasque concert live in Switzerland.

- Going to Sulawesi for the first time.

- Directing my first major label music video (i wont tell you the band name, haha).

- Japan trip!

- Performing my laptop music crap abroad in 3 countries (Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Japan) under my real name.

- 孤独 (Gūdú / Solitary) got selected at Artfools Video Festival that will be held in Larissa, Greece next year.

Here's hoping for more interesting things to come next year!

Marsh Kids "Inclination" (Lyric Video)

Helping my friends from the band Marsh Kids. They needed a lyric video to promote their new single "Inclination", so i made one. Marsh Kids is a supergroup consisting members of Sore, San Teletone, Polka Wars, Duck Dive, and Tigapagi. Shot with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

Tambuah Ciek!

"Tambuah Ciek!" is a short documentary movie that me and Gilang Qidra Ramadhan made in 2010. The movie was our final assignment in Jakarta Institute of the Arts. I directed the movie while Gilang's in charge of the sound department, and we both edited the movie using Adobe Premiere CS3. The movie follows the journey of Adjis visiting several Minangnese places to eat in Jakarta.

Sete Star Sept live at Grindgrass #2

One of my favorite japanese noisecore band, Sete Star Sept, performed at Bekasi months ago. I interviewed Kiyasu, (the drummer) for my upcoming documentary, BISING. He used to play drums for canadian powerviolence act The Endless Blockade, in fact he's one of the founding member (quite random eh).

LEMURIA: LIVE AT ROSSI MUSIK FATMAWATI

So weeks ago, Lemuria did the last show of their South East Asia Tour in Rossi Musik Fatmawati, Jakarta. Both Lemuria and the crowd were awesome. I volunteered for doing a live performance video of their whole set. I also recorded some songs from the opening acts. Check it out.

Saturday Night Karaoke with their 48-esque crowd.

 Vague performing their new material.

Braveheart with their fingerpointing crowd.

Barefood, alternative rock from Bekasi successfully made a championship of pitdivers that night.

Talking Coasty, best coast-esque band from Yogyakarta with crazy drum player.

At last but not least, the whole set of Lemuria themselves.

R.I.P. Zbigniew Karkowski

So days ago i received this terrible news from a friend that Zbigniew Karkowski, died of pancratic cancer in Peru at the age of 55.

Zbigniew Karkowski, was an international experimental musician and composer. He's from Poland but lived in Tokyo, Japan for the last 15 years (!?).

Back in 2011, a friend from Yogyakarta, Andreas contacted me to arrange a show in Jakarta for Zbigniew Karkowski, this is the first time i've heard of him. So i googled Zbigniew Karkowski and found really interesting information about him. Zbigniew emailed me and asked "some nice and cheap hotel/hostal in jakarta where he can stay" and i recommend him to stay at Jalan Jaksa. lol (he later told me that the hotel room in jaksa is shit because there are lots of mosquito there, and i replied him with "really?" then he answered "but it's ok, i can stay there" probably because he doesn't want to upset me who recommend that place haha). I took him to some places in Jakarta, he likes Kedai Disto grilled fish.

MINDZAPP #1 was the first noise gig i've ever organized, the event was held in Bara Futsal Basement (usually used for art space). There were lot of echoes in that place but i don't care since it is a noise gig anyway lol.

Zbigniew Karkowski at MINDZAPP #1 in 2011

Zbigniew seems to enjoy the show, he liked terror/incognita and Mati Gabah Jasus, since both of them are using analog instruments to make noises, Zbigniew himself used a Powerbook G4 and a Max MSP software to make sounds. The funny thing is, he doesn't want me (who introduced him before the performance) to promote his name by namedropping things like "Zbigniew Karkowski made some collaboration albums with Merzbow", he told me to stop. I interviewed him for my upcoming documentary (haven't release until now, and my producer accidently deleted his interview scene, crap).

Days later he went to Yogyakarta to meet Andreas, he was having this skin disease after staying at Jaksa for a few days (I feel bad about it though, sorry). And he used a cheap economic train class to go there (when i said cheap, i mean a really cheap and 12-hour long ride from jakarta to yogyakarta because the train always stops in every station, sorry again zbig). Once he got there, Andreas took him to hospital because the disease is gettin' worse.

In 2012, i went to Japan several times and met him at Ikebukuro, he offered me to play some gigs there  but i can't (since i was there for business trip, but fuckkk, guilty connector were also playing!). He told me to bring some dji sam soe cigarette and chili sauce from Indonesia. He was a chili sauce enthusiast, collecting some chili sauce from around the world. I gave him sambal bu rudy and he told me that sambal bu rudy was good, but it's not spicy enough, the most spicy sauce he ever tried was from Thailand. The last time i met him was in August.

I went to Japan again in late 2012 but i didn't tell him that i came, because it was just for a short business trip and i was too lazy preparing 234 cigarettes and spicy sauce. I think Zbigniew has this some kind of sixth sense (haha!), he emailed me days later he said that

"how are you doing? and when will you be back to tokyo?"
"i kind of had a feeling that you were somewhere near......"

and he told me that he's interested to come to Jakarta again in January, but i was busy back then so i decided to ignore his email (sorry).

Again, i went to Japan in April 2013 and didn't tell him. What a dick. A month later Zbigniew emailed me again, asking if i can organize shows for him in Indonesia this September. I replied his email but i he didn't reply my email. HE MIGHT HAVE REPLIED MY EMAIL BUT MY EMAIL PROVIDER (LAVABIT.COM!) GOT SUSPENDED BY US GOVERNMENT IN AUGUST.

"You don't know what you've got till it's gone" - Joni Mitchell

I'm sorry that i let you stay at Jalan Jaksa (you were right, jaksa cheap hotel sucks).
I'm sorry that i didn't reply your email last year.
I'm sorry that i didn't let you know about my visit to Japan (3 times!).
I'm sorry that i didn't arrange your subrosa compilation, but indra menus did it anyway.
I'm sorry that i fail to gave you 234 cigarette and the most spicy sauce ever for the last time.
Thank you for treating me breakfasts in Japan.
Rest In Peace Zbigniew Karkowski, it was an honour to meet you in person.

2014, 20 years later.

Hi,
Happy new year 2014. Blah blah blah.

So days ago i stumbled upon this video named "Remember 1994" on youtube. I got mixed feelings watching it. Can't believe that 1994 was 20 years ago. Fuck i'm old.

I still remember the first time i saw Lion King on theatre, the time when i went to my cousin' house and she was hyped about this new song by All 4 One "I Swear". Me playing Street Fighter 2 and Killer Instinct on Super Nintendo. While my elementary school friend likes this new character on Sega Genesis "Sonic The Hedgedog" named Knuckles. Also my mom used to play Ace Of Base songs with her office friends. Nirvana blasting through the stereo from my uncle's room, which is across my room. Saw Scatman video on Channel [V]. Used to like "Turn The Beat Around" by Gloria Estefan (rewinding my mom's cassette few times on this song). Bon Jovi's "Always" and Cranberries "Zombie" music video playing on RCTI. 4 P.M.'s "Sukiyaki" on MTV. Dumb and Dumber trailer on RCTI's Cinema Cinema etc

Also a few cool things i noticed later when i grew up like Reality Bites, Brand New Heavies "Dream On Dreamer", Lisa Loeb's "Stay", Beastie Boys "Sabotage", Nas "The World Is Yours", Oasis's "Live Forever" and at last but not least, Kurt Cobain's death.

Well, the point is, 20 years later i am now at the same age when Kurt Cobain commited suicide. I hope i can pass this year with happiness, because 2013 was lame.

Bye.
